WEST BROM head coach Roberto Di Matteo will not be concerned with how his side secure promotion to the Barclays Premier League should they find themselves back in the big time tonight.

Albion will secure a toptwo finish if they beat Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium, while automatic promotion will also be guaranteed if Nottingham Forest fail to win at home to Ipswich.

It already appears to be a matter of “when” and not “if” the Baggies clinch their fourth promotion to the Premier League in nine seasons, with the Black Country club currently 11 points clear of Forest and boasting a far superior goal difference.

But Di Matteo, in his first season at The Hawthorns and only his second in management, is taking nothing for granted.

And asked whether an Albion victory would make the occasion more special, he simply replied: ‘‘It doesn’t matter.

‘‘We have to do our job, think about ourselves, try to win the game or do our best and hopefully if we can win the game it would be great. I think we’ll go into the game like any other – trying to win.’’ He added: ‘‘I’m not thinking about anything else other than Saturday.

‘‘We have spoken to the team and they just need to focus on the job and not get carried away with all the excitement around us.

‘‘It’s understandable but mathematically we’re not there so there’s no reason for us to think differently.’’ Di Matteo will hope to catch some of his former club Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa on television after the Doncaster match, having enjoyed an illustrious playing career with the Blues.

The former midfielder’s strike settled the 2000 FA Cup final against Villa, adding to the winners’ medal he won in 1997 and his successes in the League Cup, UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

But he does not yet know where promotion to the Premier League would rank in his list of achievements.

‘‘I haven’t thought about it at all to be honest,’’ said Di Matteo, who led MK Dons to third place in Coca-Cola League One last season in his debut campaign in the dugout.

‘‘I think once this season is over then I will draw a line underneath and reflect back on the last year, the last couple of years.’’
