CHRIS Turner has a welter of strikers at his disposal – and admits finding the right blend is a nice problem to have.

Denis Behan and Adam Boyd both scored in Tuesday’s draw at Stockport, while James Brown has moved to the right wing in the last week.

Armann Bjornssson and Colin Larkin have made their mark from the bench and the Hartlepool United boss is pondering changes ahead of tomorrow’s game at Exeter.

“We need a partnership up front because we need goals and we need strikers looking like they can score 15 or 20 goals a season, otherwise we are slumbering in mid-table and downwards,’’ he said.

“Although we can get goals from various players in various position, we are always looking at the strikers.

“I’m a believer in the goalkeeper, two centre halves, two central midfielders and two strikers. They’ve got to be the backbone of the team. Our two centre halves have been magnificent all season.

“Our central midfield partnership we haven’t quite got the main thing going as yet, and the two boys up front are looking like they are coming together.”

Turner has praised the attitude of his players this season and took every available member of his squad to Edgeley Park on Tuesday night, where they all underwent a rigorous post-game training session on the pitch.

And that spirit, he admits, helped generate a comeback from two goals down.

“There is an excellent spirit in the squad and the players were even geeing themselves up in the dressing room at half-time,’’ he admitted.

“They knew they hadn’t performed well and could do better and that never say die attitude was shown again in the second half.

“I said a lot at half time and I think it did the trick.

“It could have been 3-0 at half-time but there is a good team spirit and work ethic.

“They showed that more in the second half than the first and there was many a time in the past where we would have lost that game.

“The players can’t just rely on the manager or the coach every week. Who motivates the motivators? Sometimes players have to be self motivated when they are out there.’’
