A CENTURY from Andrew Strauss was the cornerstone of an excellent performance that saw England beat New Zealand by six wickets at Old Trafford on Monday.

Durham's Paul Collingwood - although clearly out of form with the bat - was there at the end (24 not out) as England reached their target of 294 on day four of the second Test.

But the groundwork was done by Strauss (106) and Kevin Pietersen (42) with the left-handed opener reaching his 12th Test century - it was his second three-figure score in three Tests - from 178 deliveries.

England take a 1-0 lead with only one Test remaining.
