MATTHEW BATES is convinced Niko Muir has what it takes to succeed at Hartlepool United.

Signed in the close season from Hendon, where he bagged 40 goals in the Southern Premier League, the striker has adapted well to the move.

Not only has he stepped up two divisions, but in turning full-time he’s moved from London to the North-East.

He scored his first goal for Pools in midweek, turning in a Liam Noble cross from close range in the 2-2 draw with Harrogate Town.

Muir will keep his place in a front three for today’s game with Ebbsfleet at the Super 6 Stadium, Victoria Park renamed after a midweek sponsorship deal.

“Niko has showed in his two games he can play at this level and higher,’’ reflected Bates. “On Tuesday everything he did had class written all over it – build up play, technically and in front of goal.

“We demand a lot of forward players, that they put a shift in.

“And he did that, everyone appreciated what he’s done.’’

Muir was given a standing ovation when replaced late on and Bates appreciated the response from the crowd throughout.

“Fans enjoyed Tuesday’s performance and they can expect something similar on Saturday,’’ he said. “Ebbsfleet did well last year, have a good budget and a good, young manager.

“We will go for it in front of our own fans.

“We are playing an expansive game, but we don’t want to pay the price for being attacking. It is a risk and something I’ve been looking at.

“We want to commit bodies forward without taking anything away from our play.

“We are working on it, a new system, new shape and new players – there will be tweaks along the way.

“Getting the first win is important, we deserved to win in midweek and it would be nice to have four points instead of two but we are playing well and unbeaten and full of confidence in front of our own fans.’’

Jake Cassidy scored Pools’ other goal on Tuesday and he has looked a stronger player this season after being sidelined for long periods last season.

Playing the central striker role in a front three, Cassidy is still available for transfer, but will now be staying at the club, at least until January.

“He is a player who will occupy the centre-halves and I don’t like talking about him as a targetman as he’s got more about him than that.

“We are trying to work on his movement and getting in the area, I don’t think he was in the box enough last season when crosses were coming in.

“He has a desire to work hard and get in the box. I’m sure he knows for himself his return last season wasn’t great, but I’m equally sure he will score his share this season.

“As an attacking side in this system we have three up front attacking and I hate only having one up front. Out of possession we want to be solid and hard to break down.’’

Bates added: “I’ve been pleased with the performances, but not with the points return.

“We have been unlucky against Harrogate and deserved the points, but I’m sure we will get our share of late points too.

“They are a good team, I’ve watched their last game and they are expansive, similar style to us with three at the back – another good game to come.’’
