MIDDLESBROUGH defender Dael Fry helped England get off to the perfect start in the Toulon Tournament.

The 20-year-old scored his first goal for the Under-21s when he converted Tammy Abraham’s knock down to level things up after Yan Dinghao had put China in front.

Fry’s goal was followed by a red card for the Chinese skipper Sun Weizhe and then in the final minutes Abraham hit the winner for England when he turned in Newcastle forward Adam Armstrong’s delivery.

Fry will expect to keep his place in the England squad – which former Middlesbrough defender Colin Cooper is heavily involved in alongside manager Aidy Boothroyd – against Mexico on Tuesday. The final group fixture is against Qatar on June 1.

After Middlesbrough’s failure to return to the Premier League at the first attempt this season, Tony Pulis is expected to use him more next season in the Championship.

Fry impressed in the second leg of the play-off against Aston Villa when Daniel Ayala was sidelined through injury.

Pulis, who is embarking on a charity challenge this week which sees him travel to the Tower of London from the Eiffel Tower in Paris by walking, rowing and cycling, is looking to make adjustments to the Middlesbrough squad over the summer.

The extent of the tinkering could be determined by what happens to Ben Gibson and Adama Traore, although he is known to be looking for experienced players to add to his squad.

That has led to him weighing up a move for his former Stoke player Jon Walters.

The 34-year-old looks set to leave Burnley this summer and he has admitted he would be happy to drop into the Championship – sparking claims he could be on his way to Boro.

Walters was a regular for Pulis at Stoke where he made more than 200 league appearances. He moved to Burnley a year ago but has not figured as much as he would have liked.

He said: "If I wanted to move on, I wouldn't see that as an issue. But we will see. I have got another year. I am not going to rush any decisions. If someone wants you in the Premier League, great, but if not I will have no qualms about dropping. Playing games is what it is all about."
