FORMER Middlesbrough manager Steve Agnew has joined Steve Bruce's backroom staff at Aston Villa.

Agnew took over as Boro boss when Aitor Karanka departed in the second half of last season, and presided over a run of just one win from 11 games as the club was relegated from the Premier League.

A long-term member of Boro's coaching staff, he left the club in the summer and has taken up a new role at Aston Villa.

Agnew is the new first-team coach at Villa Park, working under former Sunderland boss Bruce. The pair previously worked together at Hull City.

He said: "I want to express my appreciation to everyone at Middlesbrough - particularly Steve Gibson and all the supporters.

"The club, the area, and the people will always mean a great deal to me personally. However, it's time to move forward and on to a new, exciting challenge with Aston Villa and working with Steve Bruce again."
