NORTHALLERTON’S Marc Scott has been added to the British squad for next month’s World Athletics Championships in London.

Scott will compete in the 5,000m at the Olympic Stadium after the British selectors named him as one of five additions to their original squad list.

The 23-year-old, who has spent most of the last few years based at the University of Tulsa in the United States, was promoted to the squad after he achieved the World Championships qualifying standard at an event in Belgium last weekend.

Needing to run a time of 13:22.60 to be eligible for a place at the Worlds, Scott finished in 13:22.37 to successfully earn himself a maiden appearance at a major outdoor competition.

“It’s official – World Championship selection,” tweeted Scott, who is a member of Richmond and Zetland Harriers. “Thanks for the incredible opportunity British Athletics.”

Scott will join fellow Britons Mo Farah and Andrew Butchart in the 5,000m line-up in London, but Teessider Richard Kilty has been forced to pull out of the British 4x100m squad for the Worlds.

Having been named in the initial squad selection, Kilty was expected to be a key performer next month, with his indoor sprinting speed making him a valuable member of the relay line-up.

However, the Stockton sprinter suffered a serious finger injury at the end of last week, and has been forced to withdraw because he would struggle to hold and pass on the baton during the relay.

“I am truly gutted to have to pull out of next week’s London 2017 World Championships due to a broken (open fracture) finger,” said Kilty in a statement. “It has been my dream to compete there since missing London 2012 also due to injury.

“This year things started great defending my European 60m title – but since then I have been plagued with illness and an Achilles/foot injury which have set me back a lot this summer.

“A couple of days ago I had a really bad accident and injury to my right hand, which is my relay hand, and I thought I may lose the finger. Thankfully it has been saved and is recovering well.

“This is hard for me to take in, but I will take time to have a small operation around my foot/Achilles and recover fully from illness, ready to get stuck into my preparation for 2018.”
