NEWCASTLE UNITED’S DeAndre Yedlin could make history for his country this week and will then look forward to returning to the latest place he calls home – Tyneside.

Yedlin, who was rested when the Magpies won at Rotherham on Saturday, is in the United States squad for Thursday’s friendly with Cuba. It will be the first time the two countries have played on Cuban soil since 1947.

Jurgen Klinsmann has been impressed with Yedlin’s performances so far for Newcastle and he previously outlined that dropping down to the Championship has not harmed the player’s international chances.

Klinsmann has been a man of his word and the Newcastle wide-man is looking to make the most of his latest opportunity in the North-East, having spent last season on loan at Sunderland.

Yedlin, despite tentative interest from the Black Cats who were never willing to pay the £5m asking price, moved to Newcastle in the summer and thinks it was a switch he had to make after failing to force his way into Tottenham’s first team reckoning.

The 23-year-old said: "Obviously, it's something I thought about, but at the end of the day I had to make the best decision for me.

"That's what I did. I have nothing against Sunderland. I had a great experience there, and made great friends there, but now I'm at Newcastle, and that's where my focus is.

"As a younger player, this league is great as there are so many games. It's a great move for me to come here, and working under Rafa Benitez has been unbelievable."

Yedlin grew up in Seattle, on the west coast of the States, and found living in London after his move in January last year harder than he expected after leaving the Seattle Sounders.

“I felt at home in the North-East last season and that was a big factor in my decision,” said Yedlin. “When I first came to London, it was a bit different to what I'd expected.

“I thought moving to a big city would be a very cool thing for me. But Seattle's not the biggest city. It's more like Newcastle. I think I'm more comfortable here. That was a big factor in my decision.”

Part of the reason Vurnon Anita was involved ahead of Yedlin at Rotherham was because of the travelling he had to come across the Atlantic. He will be monitored closely on his return to determine if he is ready to face Brentford on Saturday week.

Newcastle youngster Callum Roberts has been named in the England Under-20s squad. The 19-year-old will link up with the party ahead of the four-nation tournament involving Holland, Germany and the United States. Adam Armstrong, who is on loan at Barnsley, has also been called up.
