SCOTT Borthwick completed the third five-wicket haul of his career in dismissing Nottinghamshire for 534 before Durham set off at rattling rate in reply.

Mark Stoneman and Keaton Jennings completed their seventh half-century stand in nine innings and reached 72 before Jennings fell in the 14th over.

He played beautifully for 24 but clipped a low catch to short mid-wicket off Jackson Bird, who played in the Ashes Test at Chester-le-Street three years ago.

Durham were 75 for one at tea with Stoneman on 39, having made the home attack look inferior to Durham's.

The difference might lie in the quality of Nottinghamshire's lower middle order with Riki Wessels having scored 159 not out from No 7. He is also keeping wicket in the absence of the injured Chris Read.

Wessels' stand of 197 with Brett Hutton ended when the latter finally opened his shoulders after grinding out a career-best 74 from 187 balls.

He lofted Borthwick to substitute fielder Graham Clark at deep mid-wicket, then Jake Ball did something similar after driving the leg-spinner deep into the members' seating.

Borthwick also bowled Bird through a big heave and had last man Harry Gurney caught at slip to finish with five for 79, his best figures for three years.
