NEWCASTLE UNITED hit a dramatic late winner to reach the fifth round of the FA Youth Cup at the expense of North-East neighbours Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

The Magpies had earlier taken the lead in the tenth minute when Jamie Cobain was on hand three yards out to turn in a Jamie Holmes cross which was put back across the area by Callum Williams.

But Middlesbrough hit back on the half hour when Darlington-born midfielder Alex Pattison headed in a lovely cross from Callum Cooke, who had played for the Under-21s on Monday night.

Newcastle were on top when Middlesbrough edged ahead. Cooke was tripped by Michael Newberry in the area after his direct running caused problems. The winger himself converted the spot-kick.

But Dave Watson’s side from Tyneside found an extra gear in the closing stages to claim an exciting late victory over Craig Liddle’s youngsters. Daniel Barlaser hit a powerful drive to level with just five minutes remaining and there was still time for one more.

Junior Mondal drilled a shot across goal for Middlesbrough at one end and then Newcastle counter-attacked. Sean Longstaff found space and crashed in a winner off the underside of the bar to make it 3-2.
