GATESHEAD produced a positive response to Saturday’s six-goal hiding at the hands of Grimsby Town as Jamie Chandler’s first-half strike secured a 1-0 win at Altrincham.
Just two days after they suffered a 6-1 home humiliation, the Heed returned to winning ways and moved back up to sixth position in the Vanarama Conference table.
Marcus Maddison and JJ O’Donnell both wasted decent opportunities to break the deadlock, before John Oster saw his effort from the left-hand side saved.
However, Gateshead finally claimed the lead two minutes before the break as Chandler, who is formerly of Darlington, headed home Maddison’s cross.
Tom Marshall went close with a second-half header for Altrincham, but despite a late injury to O’Donnell, Gateshead’s victory was never really threatened.
Gateshead: Baird, O’Donnell (Allan 74), Rodman, Clark, Curtis, Jones, Turnbull (Ramshaw 63), Oster, Maddison (Baxter 88), Shaw, Chandler.
