THE dust had barely settled on the previous evening’s defeat in the final of the men’s singles, but James Willstrop insists he had no trouble motivating himself for a return to the squash court as the men’s doubles tournament began yesterday morning.

Willstrop, who is from Harrogate, teamed up with Daryl Selby and took just 21 minutes to cruise to an 11-1, 11-4 win over Gibraltan duo Anthony Brindle and Christian Navas.

The North Yorkshireman was still smarting from his singles defeat to bitter rival Nick Matthew, but showed no ill effects as he moved a step closer to another Commonwealth medal.

“It’s difficult as there are a lot of things going on, and physically you’re in a bit of a mess, but it’s the highs I reached (in the final) with so many people watching that drive you on,” said Willstrop.

“It’s just a wonderful atmosphere and it’s just such a high that you’ve got to come straight back to playing.”

Having claimed his second Commonwealth title on Monday, Matthew was also back in action yesterday, partnering Adrian Grant to a straight sets win, and there is a good chance the two British pairs could meet in the final.

“We’ve got a great chance,”

said Willstrop. “Daryl’s here, he’s ready to go and it’s for him as well, there’s a lot of motivation. I’m desperate to win medals here and that’s the motivation that gets you up in the morning and gets you moving.”
