MARVIN EMNES has been told to prove he has the right attitude to find full match sharpness if he wants to leave Middlesbrough for good this summer.

Emnes wants to finalise a permanent move to Swansea City where he has enjoyed his loan spell since the January transfer window.

His chances have improved considerably by the full-time appointment of Garry Monk as permanent manager of the Swans after impressing as caretaker boss.

But Monk has challenged Emnes to illustrate he has the hunger to improve as a Premier League footballer if the two get another opportunity to sit down and discuss the future.

Monk said: “I’ve talked to Marvin about how I feel going forward. I like him but he needs to improve on a lot of things – his fitness for one.

“It is a case of the club speaking to his representative and seeing what happens. There’s no definite here and there just yet but we will see in the coming weeks.”

Middlesbrough are willing to sell Emnes this summer but would be looking for a fee of at least £1m. The 25-year-old cost £3.2m when he moved from Sparta Rotterdam in 2008 but has rarely justified his price-tag.

He only has one year remaining on his contract and has been a player Swansea have tried to sign regularly since a successful loan spell back in 2010.

Emnes has scored 31 goals in 162 appearances for Middlersbrough but manager Aitor Karanka would be willing to cash in if it meant he could reinvest the money in his own squad.

Karanka is keen to make adjustments during his first close-season as Boro boss and if they could sell Emnes and Lukas Jutkiewicz, who had a successful loan at Bolton, it would significantly boost his attempts to strengthen his squad.
