THREE generations of the Carson dynasty enjoyed a racing family affair when sharing in the success of Argot at Nottingham.

The Three Valleys colt was bought and is part-owned by five-times champion jockey and former BBC TV racing pundit Willie Carson, is trained by his son, Anthony, at Newmarket and was ridden by his grandson, William.

The 16-1 chance overcame a slow start and having to challenge on the wide outside to make a successful debut in division two of the British Stallion Studs/32RedPoker.com Maiden Stakes.

Leading close home, Argot managed to get up and nail the 10-11 favourite Dandana by three-quarters of a length.

‘‘I bought him at Doncaster (for 12,000guineas). I quite liked him but I’d three by Three Valleys before and they were all no good. He had a good walk on him and I ended up putting my hand up,’’ said delighted co-owner Carson.

‘‘He’ll be better next year.

We can make the most of the family thing when he wins a Group One!’’ The winning trainer said: ‘‘He’s only done a couple of pieces of work and they weren’t spectacular.

‘‘That’s why we ran him, to see where we were with him.

He’s big and backward and needed a run.’’ Division One went to Lexington Abbey (6-1), the Kevin Ryan-trained colt making all under Neil Callan to score by a length and three-quarters from Conflicting.

‘‘Neil said he was still green and there is more improvement in him and he’ll be a nicer three-year-old. He has a lovely attitude and is one to look forward to,’’ said Ryan’s assistant Joe O’Gorman.

Torrid (5-2 favourite) gave Three Valleys a double when running away with the EBF Stallions/£32 Bonus at 32Red.com Maiden Stakes.

The Amanda Perretttrained colt went on some way from home and bolted up by eight lengths under James Doyle from Saab Almanal.

‘‘I don’t think it was a great race. There were a lot of backward types in the parade ring beforehand, but he travelled sweetly and put the race to bed nicely,’’ said Doyle.

Volume got the better of a protracted duel with market rival Gold Trail to land the spoils in the 32Red Nursery Handicap.

The latter soon led under Mickael Barzalona but got into a dog fight with the Luca Cumani-trained filly in the long straight.

Volume (9-4 favourite) nosed ahead in the final furlong and went on to score by a length and a quarter in the hands of William Buick. It was three and a half lengths back to Malachim Mist in third.

‘‘She’s very tough. I was very pleased how much courage she showed. She could have done without that rain coming, but she’s a real battler. It’s a war of attrition out there now,’’ said Buick.

Hopefilly (7-1) made a triumphant return to the scene of her only previous win three months ago to land the 32Red Casino Nursery Handicap.

The Ed Walker-trained filly was never far away as Searchlight set the pace before leading over a furlong out and hanging on by a neck from Corncockle.

‘‘She’s very game and obviously loves it here. She won here in July and it was a bonus race so she’s paid for herself several times over,’’ said owner Laurence Bellman.

Amulet (10-1) ran his rivals ragged with an all-the-way win under Shane Kelly in the 32RedBet.com Handicap as Eve Johnson Houghton’s filly relished the rain-softened conditions to beat Extraterrestrial by a length and a half.

There was a royal winner as the Roger Charlton-trained Border Legend (6-1), owned by the Queen, took the 32Red.com Handicap.

Jimmy Fortune got a dream run on the far rail and was three-quarters of a length too strong for Amaze.

Shelley Birkett guided Handheld (9-1) to a pillar to post win in the 32RedBingo.com Apprentice Handicap for her mother, trainer Julia Feilden.

‘‘He’s not run since the summer as he wants some cut in the ground,’’ said the Newmarket handler.

‘‘He was Frankel’s lead horse in his early days but then he wasn’t good enough so they used Bullet Train, but that’s his claim to fame.”
