MIKE WILLIAMSON wants to help Newcastle United become more solid at the back and manager Alan Pardew is ready to recall the experienced defender at Cardiff City this weekend.

Williamson has pushed himself right back in to contention a little more than a month after he felt he could have been on his way out at St James’ Park.

Pardew had been looking to bring in an extra centre-back throughout the summer and West Ham’s James Tomkins was on the radar until he was priced out of a move to Tyneside.

Newcastle’s failure to bring in the extra defender meant they were not in a position to allow Williamson to leave, particularly give the early season injury problem suffered by Steven Taylor.

The defensive situation has not been helped by Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa’s poor form, which will see Williamson recalled when the Magpies head out at the Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday.

The 29-year-old has not started a Premier League game so far this season but a sign of his return to the forefront of Pardew’s thinking was his half-time introduction at Everton on Monday night.

With Newcastle trailing 3-0, Yanga-Mbiwa’s punishment for a horrendous first half showing ended with Williamson coming on for him at the break – and Newcastle went on to score two goals.

Now the former Portsmouth man is in line to slot in for the out of sorts France international, when Newcastle need an improvement on a recent record of conceding six goals in their last two matches.

Williamson, who was described as having a “good chance” of facing Cardiff by Pardew, has not been told if he will play against the Bluebirds. But he is ready.

He said: “It’s not about me. It’s all about the team and getting points. I don’t really look at the personal side of things. I only want to be enjoying us picking up the points.

“It was mixed emotions. I’m angry because we didn’t get a result at Everton but I enjoyed being out there again. It’s a privilege to pull on a Newcastle United shirt and is always good to play games.”

After slipping to successive defeats to Hull City and Everton, Newcastle need to find a way to stop the rot in South Wales after further unsubstantiated rumours this week that Pardew had lost his job.

Williamson, talking to the club’s website said: “We are struggling to find the consistency we need and that performance at Everton summed it up. We know we’ve got talent in the squad, we know we’ve got character and hard work ethic, but we have to find the balance to be able to get results week in and week out.”

One of Newcastle’s best talents at the moment is striker Loic Remy. The French striker scored for the second consecutive game at Everton, but Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has hinted he does not want him back at Loftus Road.

Remy is on a season long loan from QPR and Newcastle’s director of football Joe Kinnear recently suggested a permanent deal was still to be discussed and finalised. Redknapp, though, is working on the basis the £9m man will not be back.

“Remy wanted to go to Newcastle and good luck to him,” said Redknapp. “ I hope he does well there. All those who’ve gone on loan, good luck to them. I hope they do well, stay where they are and get a contract there.”
