I FULLY agree with Darlington funeral director Bryan Shepherd (HAS, June 22) about the resurfacing of the A68 West Auckland Road between Darlington and Heighington.

The dual carriageway between the A1 roundabout and the Swanhouse roundabout has been resurfaced in four stages. On the last stage just completed, only half the road has been resurfaced leaving what has always been the worst part of the dual carriageway. This should have been resurfaced in the first stage as it is in a dangerous state.

As well as being detrimental to vehicles, especially motorcycles, a lot of people drive on the right of the road to avoid the potholes with other cars undertaking on the left.

I spoke to Darlington highway department who said because of lack of funding they could only do part of the road and did the first part as ruts were starting to form near the motorway roundabout. I never thought there was a problem there.

It has spent £150,000 and I estimate it would have cost less than £75,000 to finish it off. It will have to be done within the next couple of years when money will be even tighter. By then it could cost a lot more than £150,000.
