ALLOW me to enlighten VJ Connor regarding speed bumps (HAS, May 30) as a resident in possession of all the facts.

At our request, traffic on Rockingham Drive, in Bishop Auckland, was monitored and the residents were astounded at the results.

In 24 hours, almost 4,000 vehicles travelled along Rockingham Drive – many in excess of 40 mph. This made it nigh on impossible for residents to exit their cul de sacs.

During the consultation period, Durham County Council had more than 200 letters supporting traffic calming and only 15 against.

The speed bumps are the best I have come across. They are a table top type where a slight incline takes you onto it at one end and off again at the other end. If you approach them at less than 15 mph you hardly know they are there.

So well done Durham County Council for making our lives and those of our children much safer.
