SOMERSET County Council has banned the chamber of trade in Burnham-on-Sea from hanging bunting on lamp posts and street furniture for the forthcoming celebrations of our beloved Queen’s Diamond Jubilee (Echo, May 29).
The reason? Health and safety fears.
They are so silly. The jubilee is a once-in-a-lifetime wonderful celebration, which many of us will never see again.
Faced with terrible publicity, the county council partly relented, saying that bunting could be hung from shop fronts but not from lamp posts because they would require risk assessments to be carried out.
Act sensibly for our Queen’s celebrations.

IT’S very nice to see that Darlington town centre is being decorated this week in preparation for the Queen’s Jubilee.
However, I couldn’t help noticing that two of the four Union Flags under the town clock faces are upside down.
I’m sure other readers will have noticed this.
While it is sorting out the flags, can Darlington Borough Council also look at removing weeds that are strangling the shrub beds on High Row as well?
Ian Sadler, Darlington.
