REGARDING the article about Darlington’s Covered Market and how stallholders are calling for the council to make improvements to increase their trade (Echo, May 14).
For many years I have tried to have the indoor market made more accessible for disabled people.
Darlington Borough Council should not do anything to improve the Covered Market until the stallholders take responsibility and agree to improve the access for wheelchair users, scooters and prams etc.
Some stallholders continue to increase their space into the walkways, making it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for wheelchair users and scooter users to access the market.
At times I have personally avoided going to butchers’ stalls because I cannot access them due to other selfish stallholders who have obstructed the aisles with their goods.
Our Shopmobility customers and wheelchair users visiting the town often voice this complaint and avoid the indoor market.
If stallholders want to increase their business they need to first get their act together regarding access for all.
