THE BBC sports programme Grandstand first went on the air on Saturday, October 11, 1958.
Since then it has covered great sporting events such as the Grand National, the FA Cup final, the Boat Race, rugby league, professional boxing, motor racing, cricket, show jumping, tennis, snooker and darts.
And let’s not forget the classified football results with so many people checking the pools coupons, and the the rugby union and racing results read by Len Martin and John Langham.
The presenters and commentators of Grandstand have included David Coleman, Des Lynam, Frank Bough, Jim Laker, Sue Barker, Ted Lowe, Harry Carpenter, John Motson and Murray Walker.
Great sporting memories.
Terry Christie, Sunderland.
