PETE WINSTANLEY (HAS, Feb 29) says that in my letter of February 23 I had “difficulty in grasping the concept of British identity”.

Now that’s strange because I set out no views as to what British identity consisted of.

I just said that various Westminster politicians currently lauding what they call British identity are precisely the ones who have done most to destroy it, by allowing mass immigration.

Even stranger, Mr Winstanley fails to tell us what HE means by word “identity”. Instead he just launches into an anti-BNP tirade.

So what is “identity”?

What I mean by it, and I may be wrong, is the collection of characteristics that differentiate the British from the rest of the world.

So (taking the extreme case) if you jumble up all the people of the world and then distribute them at random, each country loses its identity.

That is, each country becomes pretty well identical.

I am therefore sticking by my original point which was that mass and indiscriminate immigration leads to a loss of a country’s identity.

Ralph Musgrave, Durham.

BRITISH cultural identity is the collective term for the separate cultures of the nations and isles which form the British Isles.

Each nation and region has a unique cultural identity, which was shaped and dictated by the dominant power within that nation and region, but due to history these cultures have affected neighbouring regions.

Migrants have added to this but only because the majority adopted those aspects from the incomers’ cultures which were acceptable to them.

However, there are those of African, Asian, East European and Middle Eastern descent who, either through birth or naturalisation, identify themselves as British, but practice traditions which are abhorrent to British values.

The fact few want to face is that there are cultures which simply can’t co-exist, creating tensions which erupt in violence, riots and conflict etc which continues until one culture yields to the other.

If those we elect truly believe in a national British identity they should stop closing libraries, museums and art galleries and ensure that British history and British culture is taught in British schools.

No matter our race, creed or colour, we live in Britain.
