I HAVE just filled in Durham County Council’s library consultation and, on reflection, wish I hadn’t.

I suspect I’ve been conned.

The consultation offers relatively minor choices set against a backdrop of major decisions already taken. My involvement could, therefore, be counted as tacit approval of major cuts to the service.

The level of cuts does not figure in the consultation.

The Council will inevitably say that it had no choice when it came to cuts imposed on its budget. But if it wants to genuinely involve residents in the tough choices ahead, it needs to avoid insulting our intelligence.
