HOW many people realised the flowers shown on page 14 of The Northern Echo, Monday, January 16, in the article by Dr Phil Gates are not lesser celadines but winter aconite?

When planted with snowdrops the winter aconite forms a stunning display.

Aconites are poisonous, so don’t eat them but they are still a pretty flower in January.

Very interesting though is the shrub verbena which has been in flower since last September.

They are a winter flowering shrub, and usually flower from November through the winter.

The parks have put on a great show.
