WHEN the only lift from Walkergate car park up to Millennium Place broke down on Friday night during the Lumiere display, in Durham City, the only resulting action appeared to be to put an Out of Order sign on the lift door.

Was it not beyond the thoughts of whoever organised the sign to arrange for assistance to be available for any wheelchair user who was separated from their car seven floors below?

I have been frustrated on many occasions at the delay caused by having only one small lift for such a busy area.

The breakdown of that lift, and the lack of any plan to cope, has only highlighted the poorly conceived design of the area.
