IT was an excellent write-up on Second Lieutenant Donald Simpson Bell VC (Echo, Sept 6), from Harrogate, the only English professional footballer to be awarded the Victoria Cross, who was remembered at a ceremony in France earlier this month.

Your many Scottish readers will be interested to know that Lance Corporal William Angus also won the VC.

Born on February 2, 1888, in Arndale, West Lothian, he played professionally for Glasgow Celtic prior to enlisting in the 8th Battalion Highland Light Infantry in the First World War.

On June 12, 1915, he went alone almost to the enemy’s lines to rescue an officer. He received 40 wounds but survived.

His deserved recognition was gazetted on June 29, 1915, and he was presented with his medal by King George V at Buckingham Palace on August 30, 1915.

He died at Carluke, Lanarkshire, on June 14, 1959, and is buried in Wilton Cemetery there. His VC is proudly held and displayed in the Scottish United Services Museum.
