RE Christ Food-Wood’s tribute to Sir Cyril Smith, the former Liberal and later Liberal Democrat MP for Rochdale from 1972-92, who died earlier this month (HAS, Sept 7).
It is a mystery why Sir Cyril was never awarded a peerage. He was an outspoken maverick parliamentarian who was often in conflict with the party leadership.
The reason why he was never awarded a peerage could be because his independence in the party and the House of Commons was resented by leading figures in the Liberal Democrat party. He could have contributed greatly to the debates in the House of Lords.
