RECENT objections to the proposed redevelopment of Barnard Castle’s Witham Hall (Echo, some editions, July 26) should be given due consideration, but should not deter the hall’s trustees from proceeding with their plans.

The town and the wider population deserve improved community facilities and although I may not agree wholeheartedly with all of economic development group Barnard Castle Vision’s ideas, at least the Witham’s trustees have the foresight, imagination, and energy to see the undoubted potential their joint proposals would provide.

Unlike many out-of-town shopping malls, the proposed small, independent retail outlets would complement existing businesses, and the cinema/performance area, for the main part out of view, would be a major addition to the town’s cultural life.

Surely the popularity and success of The Station venue at Richmond should give many residents a glimpse of what is on offer to Barnard Castle and the Upper Dale.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a major contribution to the town’s future and the trustees deserve support.

The objectors have had ample time to view the plans, voice opinions, offer suggestions, and make recommendations, but do not fully represent the silent majority who do not wish to see the town remain in a Fifties’ “time-warp” – though at least then we had two viable cinemas.

P Holmes, Barnard Castle.
