I SHARE Christopher Wardell’s hopes for the future of “Teesside Airport” (HAS, July 6) now that it has been taken over by Vancouver Airport Services (VAS).

Its current name, DTV (Durham Tees Valley) International Airport, is a misnomer in more ways than one. Its only route outside the UK is to Amsterdam and its name – for those who know what “DTV” stands for – is misleading.

Many a time at far-flung airports the check-in staff have been mystified at the mention of the above name, but have reacted instantly to the magic word, “Teesside”.

I note that VAS has also become the majority shareholder of the other two airports operated by Peel Airports: Robin Hood (Doncaster-Sheffield) and John Lennon (Liverpool).

Could not our own local airport be given a similar memorable name? I suggest St George (Darlington-Tees). The St George Hotel, once the Officers Mess of RAF Middleton St George, is on site. Next year is the 70th anniversary of its opening by Bomber Command.

In 1942, Canadian Squadrons were based there and now, through VAS, we have a new link with Canada.

Let us hope that very soon the airport hall will again throng with passengers and that the cry will be “For the World and St George!”
