RE Tony Kelly’s letter regarding the shrieking hedgehog near Wackerfield (HAS, May 8). I had a similar experience near Stanhope last summer when I passed a motionless, but very noisy hedgehog in daytime hours while walking my dog.
It certainly sounded distressed and “screamed” loudly several times as I walked past, but it didn’t attempt to curl into a ball as they instinctively do when threatened.
I returned the next day to find, unfortunately, it had died on the same spot.
