CAN I offer my hearty congratulations to your reporter Chris Lloyd for his excellent reporting on the recent Regional Grand Committee in Middlesbrough? (Echo, Sept 26) His description was exactly as it was – nothing more than a self-congratulating exercise between the Labour MPs who bothered to turn up.

Ray Mallon asked residents to come to more council meetings – why would they want to sit though anything like that?

The saddest part of all is that this affair cost the taxpayers plenty and I dread to think what the policing costs were – the Town Hall was swarming with police.

As for Mr Lloyd’s description of the way the Labour MPs all ganged up and turned on the one opposition MP who came – that is exactly what happens in the council chamber here in Middlesbrough should anyone dare to question a Labour decision.

It is worth noting that Mr Mallon left the meeting very early, swiftly followed by Labour councillor Barry Coppinger and then myself. A complete and utter waste of taxpayers’ money – once again!
