GIVEN that we are in the grip of a world economic recession, Chancellor Alastair Darling’s Budget was very balanced. The 50p income tax rate for high earners was something of a surprise, but a bold and necessary step.
It is pleasing to see that £50m is being made available to improve Army housing and that the ever-popular winter fuel allowance will be maintained.
The state pension, too, will be increased in real terms next year.
Mr Darling’s belief that an economy must grow and not be cut is interesting and we must hope he is right.
