WHILE Des More is astounded by so-called "liberal hypocrisy" (HAS, May 23), I am equally astounded at his ability to breathe with his head in the sand.

His blinkered arguments and misrepresentation of other people's views beggars belief. To boil arguments down to such a basic level without taking into account history and context is grossly misleading.

It is not about liberal sensibilities, but about pragmatism. We should be concerned with finding the best solution to any given problem rather than consistently taking a position on the left or the right.

No single political ideology has all the right answers and it is by acknowledging this fundamental truth that we will realise consistency of position means very little whatsoever.

I hope if we were to use military intervention in Burma, as Mr More suggests, the Prime Minister wouldn't pretend that the junta has WMDs (weapons of mass destruction) as his predecessor did with Iraq.

Of course, military intervention will never happen. Burma has nothing to offer us economically or politically and that, unfortunately, is the measuring stick our Government uses to dictate its foreign policy.
