A PENSIONER from Grimsby wrote to his local councillor asking why he could not have free meals, a 42ins television without paying a licence fee, free workouts at the local gym, free snooker and pool and some drugs brought to his house "like the man down the road".

His councillor said he could not because he was just a pensioner whereas the "man down the road" was a prisoner.

Serving time used to be referred to as "at Her Majesty's pleasure". It is quite clear who has the pleasure nowadays - all paid for by some of the poorest pensioners in the country. What a compassionate society Gordon Brown has created.
