IN response to Councillor Gerald Lee, Chair of Litter Free Durham & Darlington, (HAS, Jul 31), as members of the public are being encouraged to act as street champions and keep our own area free from the litter, we are doing the job of the street cleansing department, thus saving the council man power.

But services and jobs are still being cut from all areas of the council, so one wonders why we are being asked to pay such large amounts of council tax.

It is not for the services, as we are doing them ourselves, so I can only think it is for increments in councillors' allowances and management wages.
