I OFTEN hear it opined that the national anthem should be replaced with something a bit more catchy.
Although I admit “God save the Queen” is a bit of a dirge, it’s part of a tradition, which makes this country the envy of the world.
Originating in the 17th century, the national anthem has long been associated, not only with loyalty to the monarch, but to the nation itself.
With Brexit approaching, now is the time to tighten our national bonds, not to loosen them.
I’ve been delighted to see the England rugby team sing the National Anthem with all the gusto they can muster. But, I despair at the pathetic efforts of our footballers, who don’t even know the words. If you’re representing your country, unlike Jeremy Corbyn, you should be proud to sing out with vigorous patriotism.
In my opinion, Gareth Southgate should give even the most talented of our players a simple message: Sing up, or you’re dropped!
Long may the National Anthem reign!
