REGARDING the crass suggestion by Darlington Borough Council that Holocaust Memorial Day be held in the Cornmill Shopping Centre in January 2018 (Echo, Nov 3), here’s a better suggestion: as we still have a beautiful library in Crown Street (which I will fight to retain) donated to the people of the town by a peaceful Quaker, Edward Pease, what better place would there be to hold this important memorial?
Children and adults are always welcome there and it has the correct atmosphere and ethos to host and enhance the event.
Unlike a shopping centre (where those walking past would only pause in their buying to stop and gaze in curiosity), the library would honour and respect attendees of this solemn occasion which promotes peace and unity.
