THE Mossos d’Esquadra police in Catalonia must take orders from Madrid. If not, the Spanish government will have no option but to disband the Catalan police force.

The Mossos d’ Esquadra number 20,000. They are one of the most heavily armed police forces in Europe. If weapons fall into the wrong hands, there will be armed uprising.

The Catalan referendum was illegal. The European Union supports the Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy – even the opposition parties in Spain have backed him in implementing article 155 of the constitution to restore the rule of law.

Spain is in uncharted waters that could end up in violence.

Catalonia is divided. Those who want to stay within Spain are afraid and intimidated into remaining silent. Catalonia may explode into violence we haven’t seen since the break-up of Yugoslavia.

Mr Rajoy must deal with the situation very carefully and swiftly. We do not want a close ally of the United Kingdom, a member of NATO, a member of the European Union, falling into a civil war.
