I FULLY sympathise with Steve Lawson’s reaction to the obnoxious woman he encountered on Framwellgate bridge (HAS, Sept 27) – but did he have to suggest that she was a Christian (or at any rate “pseudo-Christian”)?
How could he know that?
She was a complete stranger to him. She might have been anything or nothing.
I know insinuating someone like that is religious is a good way of getting at them because you can then accuse them of hypocrisy as well as bad manners.
However, it’s not a valid mode of attack because it’s not an ethical one. Plus, it’s not fair to genuine Christians, who are the majority and who include some elderly women who are as gentle, kind and compassionate as anyone you will find this imperfect world.
