ONE can certainly agree with the Chris Moncrieff column (Echo, Aug 22) headlined ‘A broad church? Not any more’, having left the Labour Party after over 25 years membership with 12 other Redcar and Cleveland Labour members (including six cabinet members and four former mayors) back in February 2015.

Of course tribal politics can be more complicated.

Our resignations were due to consistent bullying, which the Labour Party refused to investigate as the 2015 national elections were on the horizon.

What happened was the weak right teamed up with the stronger left to squeeze out the moderates in Redcar and Cleveland.

However the Labour right is getting crushed by the far left, with backing from the far left Momentum group.

Several of those who left Labour looked to rejoin, only to be refused membership.

The reality is Labour do not need former moderates to rejoin as they have the biggest political party in Western Europe.

Hence the recent idea of a new ‘Democrat’ party may appeal to moderates no longer required by the once Labour (broad church) Party.
