A RECENT letter asked if we need 650 MPs (HAS, July 27). Having spent time as a town, district and county councillor, if the government can get rid of seven district councils in County Durham, it should then look inwards.

I would say that between 400 and 450 MPs should be ample. At the same time, we should invoke an elected senate of 100 peers in the House of Lords, not affiliated to any political party.

Remembering that the UK has £1.7 trillion of national debt, further savings should be made.

My personal view is that local government added an extra burden to local council tax payers.

This is a personal view that I have aired at Durham County Council.

Why do we need Area Action Partnerships, when we have local town councils doing much of the same work? I am in favour of consulting with the public, but that could be done electronically and hence be much cheaper.
