THE new leader of Ukip sounds very northern and working class.

He is clearly envisaging his party having a place in British politics if we actually do leave the EU. He talks of a party for the working class which is not Labour.

He imagines a working class which is not influenced by socialism, and does not understand how it is that Labour values formulated in the 19th Century are deeply ingrained in working class culture.

The call for a referendum on Europe existed before Ukip was established. Many felt that the voters were misled in the referendum in 1975 thinking they were voting for a common market and finding they were part of a setup which involved ever closer union of European nations.

I voted remain because I did not feel deceived in 1975 having knowledge of the original Rome Treaty, but I was never against testing it with another referendum hoping everything would be fairly explained.
