I WONDER how Spennymoor residents feel about there only being, £600,000 available for funding part of the re-development of the Festival Walk shopping mall, in Spennymoor?

When you consider the extra council tax revenue that Durham County Council have received from all of the new housing developments that have been built in many parts of Spennymoor it seems a paltry amount.

In fact, it is exactly the same amount set aside to fund the Durham City Lumiere event, which will leave no long term benefit to council tax payers.

I would ask the new chief executive and his head of regeneration to allocate extra cash, perhaps from the council’s reserves, to help to fund their number one regeneration project for Spennymoor. I would like Spennymoor Town Council also to consider making a contribution.

Festival Walk should be completely demolished. In the long term I am convinced this would be better; although it should be done in phases to minimise disruption to existing shops and their customers.
