I FAIL to understand how a family of four can create the amount of waste that is referred to in S Shields’ letter. The only thought that comes to mind is that this family are not recycling, or they are not recycling as much as they could.

Our household comprises of two adults, a 14-year-old and a 10-yearold.

Our wheelie bin is never full; often only containing two bin bags per fortnight. Yet I see households with less people who never recycle and with overflowing wheelie bins.

Everyone within the borough should reassess how they deal with their household waste and recycle wherever possible, especially given the current financial climate. The council has to pay for sending rubbish to landfill.

However it receives money for every tonne of sorted household waste recycled – money that could be spent on those services currently being cut.
