HOW very interesting to read the letter ‘Sack our MPs’ in HAS on May 27. I am not sure that a cocktail of left, right and liberal politics will give us a fairer, more democratic society.
Politicians can only normally be sacked via the ballot box, hence four or five years virtually guaranteed in a political job.
What happens to newly-elected politicians is that they get sucked into the system, whether that’s the ‘Westminster bubble’ or the council scenario.
What I found surprising when I attended regional meetings was leaders pulling up to the council doors in chauffeur-driven cars.
This didn’t just appertain to North-East politicians. The highlight of the posh politicians’ lifestyle was when MPs were exposed for their expenses and ‘flipping’ in relation to accommodation etc.
I fear that lessons haven’t been universally learned and this, along with the EU referendum campaign, will continue to turn the public off politics.
