YOUR anonymous correspondent of Saturday, January 30, who appears to have an enormous chip on their shoulder about coming from Skerne Park, is totally missing the point.
I have lived in Darlington all my life and growing up, Skerne Park did have a certain reputation.
However, I have always had friends from all areas of town including Skerne Park and find that anyone worth knowing will speak as they find and not judge a person by their background or where they live.
Skerne Park head teacher Kate Chisholm is simply making a stand for common decency and should be applauded for her brave actions. The only “disservice” taking place is by the bone idle parents who cannot carry out one of the basic functions in life, which is to put some clothes on before leaving the house.
It is hardly surprising that this state of affairs is being discussed in other playgrounds in Darlington and indeed beyond, but it has nothing whatsoever to do with prejudice as claimed. The humiliation is being brought about by these parents, and is in turn inflicted on their children, their school and their town by showing a complete lack of respect, not least for themselves.
Where next would this be appropriate? In the supermarket, on the bus, in the dentist waiting room? It is not acceptable anywhere, and that is surely the point Kate Chisholm is attempting to instil into the young people in her care, in the absence of any responsibility from their parents.
