THE colourful correspondence from Robert Craig, of Weston-super-Mare (HAS, Nov 19) was enjoyable if a bit misleading.

“Dictionary” is a genuine English word derived from Latin, whereas the promoted “wordbook” is something different.

Readers may recall this as a loosely alphabetical writing and spelling exercise from schooldays.

British English is a glorious asset, but let’s keep it simple.
