RICHMONDSHIRE District Council must be congratulated on its decision to withdraw plans to use a well used car park as a site for residential flats (Echo, May 2).The advice of a barrister was that the council would have a high risk of losing if a judicial review launched by protestors was heard in the High Court.

The same cannot be said of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council which, despite protests by many local residents, is still hellbent on closing one of the most popular seafront car parks on the North-East coast and building 295 houses in its place.

Redcar's Majuba seafront car park has beautiful panoramic views of the whole of Coatham Bay and has been used by generations of families on a day run to this beautiful coastal area.

The building of these houses will have a huge impact on tourism in this area as many people use the car park on a regular basis to either stop and admire the view or walk the short distance into Redcar.

Once given over to developers there will be no turning back and an area of outstanding beauty will be lost forever.
