I WOULD like to contradict Peter Jefferies' letter (HAS, Mar 30).
There is not a need for an A&E extension at the University Hospital of North Durham.
There already is an excellent A&E facility in Bishop Auckland, which was closed even though it was fully used.
If this were re-opened, it would save many patients from having to travel vast distances for emergency treatment. Not to mention £20m.
