NIGEL BODDY’S letter (HAS, June 13) bemoans the fact that some voters were confused by the ballot slip at the recent European elections.

God help us all if these voters can’t tell the difference between what’s written on a single sheet of paper, when they may be given the opportunity to make important decisions about our continued membership of the European Union.

Despite the well used political phrase “the voter knows best” I suspect that most of us have little knowledge of the implications of any government stance.

I can name probably five cabinet ministers if pushed, I know of the Working Time Directive , I’m aware there is a fish quota, but how either impact financially, or otherwise, on individuals or communities, I’m lost.

Most people will vote on the issue of Europe, like me, fuelled and filled with emotion and very few facts.

I can select someone to look after my interests. I hope this person does what they claim, if not I can elect someone else next time.

Whichever way you choose to vote, let’s hope the result is not affected by someone who can’t distinguish between candidates, let alone policies.

B Jackson, Sacriston.
