AS avid theatre goers, my wife and I visited Sunderland Empire last Saturday to catch the new musical Happy Days.
Our memories of Happy Days on TV were that it was a lighthearted and entertaining (if not a little cheesy) programme from the US and although the stage version was not too dissimilar we found it thoroughly entertaining.
What was really disappointing, however, was the almost lack of an audience – the theatre appeared to be less than a quarter full.
Was it perhaps people’s perception of the cheesiness of the show which stopped theatregoers attending, or the lack of advertising on the theatre’s part, or even the stars of the show which put people off?
I don’t know, but we felt really sorry for the whole cast who gave their all in front of a paltry audience (who indeed did their best to encourage the performers).
I hope the cast have happier days in Birmingham this week.
